How this works, and where the numbers come fromSHOW

Why answers here differ

Gov.uk classifies 187 occupations as Medium Skilled. Since 22 July 2025 a medium skilled job can only be sponsored if it appears on the immigration salary list or the temporary shortage list. 111 appear on neither and are closed to new applicants; a further 9 can only be used to extend a visa already held. The occupation table does not say this, so tools built from that table alone report all 187 as eligible.

Sources

  • Occupation codes, skill levels and going rates — gov.uk Skilled Worker publications, rules in force from 22 July 2025
  • National pay scales for healthcare and education — six separate gov.uk schemes covering 38 occupations
  • Immigration salary list (25 codes), temporary shortage list (52), PhD discount list (95), Health and Care route (39)
  • Fees, health surcharge, maintenance, processing times and priority services
  • Income tax and National Insurance 2026/27, including Scottish rates

Everything retrieved 21 August 2026. Occupation titles were cross-checked against the ONS SOC 2020 classification; 367 of 373 matched exactly, the rest being gov.uk wording variants.

What this does not cover

  • Three salary list entries apply in Scotland only — flagged in the result, but the tool does not ask where the job is
  • The temporary shortage list is time-limited and under review; 47 occupations depend on it
  • The four-year cap on stays using the new entrant or postdoctoral salary discount
  • Whether a specific employer holds a sponsor licence
  • Minimum qualifications by occupation — the Home Office does not set these by code; employers do
